Light Source
From painted lanterns to LED lights that break every rule — this is a road full of wonder. A story of a creature following the light.
I studied fine arts in college, then spent years writing copy. Chasing love and freedom, I left everything behind and arrived in Amsterdam a decade later.
A stranger in a new city, carrying one enormous dream — to one day become truly myself.
I sold my illustrated foldouts on Rembrandt Square, standing among the passing tourists, holding in my hands the thing I loved most. My calling.
Then one day, a Dutch friend brought me two lanterns she'd bought from a Chinese shop. She wanted me to paint on them.
Painting on a lantern with a brush demands total presence — one breath, one stroke, beginning to end without hesitation. In that new challenge, I felt something I hadn't felt in years. A sense of completion, like a journey around the earth that had finally returned to where it began.
Inspired by the lantern, I created a series called “Follow the Light” — 彷彿若有光.
That was 2017. I wandered the streets of Amsterdam with my portfolio, searching for somewhere to show my work.
Behind the Royal Palace, I found a remarkable art space — K.I.S. — filled with bold paintings and furniture unlike anything I'd seen. JAN ran the space. Against all odds, he gave me my first exhibition.
After seeing my painted lanterns and paintings, Jan invited me to explore the realm of LED lighting.
He believed that my artistic sensibility and sensitivity to color could bring something new to this emerging field.
He rewired my artist's mind. Helped me think in new ways, break through technical limits. Under his guidance, I dismantled a lantern, salvaged its wire frame, and created a new series of paper LED works —
In the Light — 於光中.
Every gaze, a silent promise.
Every light that turns on —
positive meets negative.
Yin and yang, becoming one.
A light within, rekindled.
To follow the light. To build it.
Every lamp begins with surrender —
to inspiration,
to beauty,
to the quiet insistence on doing it right.
The Art I Make.
The Light You Give.
K.I.S. has since closed its doors. But the light Jan passed to me continues to burn within.
LED technology — compact, cool, low-voltage — has opened infinite possibilities for the contemporary lighting artist.
Out of deep respect for safety, I use only locally or internationally certified light sources and power components in everything I make.
Yet the rules governing the import and export of lighting are strict, and different in every country. For this reason, some works from BEING Light and Art will need you to install a light source and power supply suited to where you are.
In a deeper sense — I invite you to complete what I have made. The art is mine. The light is yours. Together, we keep this energy alive, across every border, in every home.
